The establishment of lack of freedom... « Thread Started on Jun 2, 2008, 2:32pm »
Open to all.
He’d never liked these places. Establishments of the law just seemed to be something that could take away Bills freedom. Freedom, was such a an odd word. In many ways Bill didn’t have freedom to be an upstanding citizen and he was tied down by the crimes he’d commit for money and well, general well being. Even with the restraints on his life Bill Sikes had less restricted life then many no expectations, no family, no nothing except -perhaps Nancy. He’d put her to the back of his mind but she was always there.
You may wonder why Bill was lurking around the very place that could have him dead or imprisoned. Well the answer was simple he was watching to see how many police were entering the place. If enough entered then Bill would signal to Charlie and Dodger and then they’d go off to pick pockets. It was a simple procedure and not something Bill took part in often but seeing as some of the other boys were busy. Basically they’d begged Bill beyond irritation and he’d agreed.
He slouched lazily against one wall, watching police enter end leave the building, it seemed perhaps there were a rather important case going on seeing as no one was watching the streets. Bill shoved one large rough hand into his pocket to check the time. Five minutes had gone by and it seemed there were few police about. Bill looked around and lifted his top hat as if he were playing the perfect gentleman. That was not the case … no it wasn’t. As soon as the hat was lifted Charlie and Dodger could be seen walking up and down the streets.
Bill grunted a small hello to a few familiar faces and began to leave the dangerous area, or he would of done if he hadn’t of bumped into someone.

William moved hastily up the streets, an annoyed look could be seen on his usually calm face. One of the minors had arrived into him just a half an hour ago, told him they could not handle the case and quit. He had been forced to leave so quickly, that he had no time to even call a carriage. Wearing his usual suit, coat, top hat, and business shoes, he looked so in place that it unnerved him slightly. Either the lawyers were having a dress down day, or the standards of the court were severely dropping, William doubted it was the first leaving only the last. A sigh escaped his lips as he hurried up the steps.
Stopping at the last step, he lightly brushed off his coat and fixed the papers under his arm. A few of the lawyers around recognized him and waved happily, forcing William to restrain another groan, before waving to them. There were a few faces he had never seen before, though those he knew looked at him and then informed the others of who he was. William just knew he would be dining with these idiots tonight, and most of them were bloody newbies, on top of it all. Calming himself he continued up the stairs. Pulling the papers out, he read the case file. Why in gods name had the boy dropped out? All you needed was a good speech and the woman was free. Perhaps it was because it was such a famous trial. A woman he murdered her husband who was a copper, so the cops were demanding justice.
Still reading the papers William felt someone bang into him, and was about ready to whack the person around the head with his cane, but instead settled for bringing the papers down and looking at the man with a raised eyebrow. He had seen hims around somewhere, ah yes, he was a thief, but why the formal clothes. William knew there was something going on, and lost interest in the case. Lightly pulling his pocket watch out he noted he had fifteen minutes. Slipping the watch back into his pocket. "It is rare to see you in this side of town, were you any relation to the woman? " He asked calmly, pointing out straight away to Bill that he knew him, but keeping to closed off to everyone else. "Or perhaps are you here for another reason?" He asked calmly, his eyebrow raising slightly higher.

Bill, looked down at the person he’d bumped into. It seemed Bill always looked down at people, coming from such a towering height he and his body type suggested that he could quite easily squash anyone he wished to. He surveyed this newest company, he was a lawyer was he not? Either way Sikes was quite sure he knew the person infront of him. Bulls-eye whom had been with Bill the whole time seemed to take an offence to the person in his master’s presence and let out a low growl signifying that fact. Sikes lowered his hand to signal the dog to shut up and Bulls-eye complied quickly.
"It is rare to see you in this side of town, were you any relation to the woman?“ Sikes grunted slightly. He realised at once who was in front of him. Bloody William Gracy. ”No, can’t a man take a walk?.” Sikes’ ever-violent temper seemed to make a brief appearance. "Or perhaps are you here for another reason?" Sikes frowned before narrowing his eyes. ”No I ain’t ere’ for any other reason and if I were wots it of your business?” Sikes didn’t appreciate Gracy’s nosing about and Bulls-eye whom had remained quiet up until now let out another vicious growl.
It was seemingly odd and peculiar how master and dog seemed to have constant matching moods. If Bill were in a well-spirited mood the dog would also be in a well-spirited mood. It also appeared that wherever Sikes was the dog would also be unless he’d been ordered away from his master; which, may I add was not often. The two were equals, both brutal and both low-lives with the exception of Sikes who seemed to regard getting money through theft as proper and normal behaviour.
Bill looked behind to see what perhaps Charley Bates and Dodger were up to. It appeared that currently they were following some old man about who seemed more then a little well off. Those higher-class men they deserved to be robbed unless they paid their way out of it. Sikes sniffed a moment and looked back at his acquaintance, ”Ant’ you got somewhere to go, other then to bother the public? You ruddy beaks don’t know what’s bloody good for you.”

William stepped away from the man, finding both his size and his attitude annoying. William hated being over -powered, and just the height of the man made him want to pull his knife out of his cane and chop his legs off. William noticed his shoulders had tensed in annoyance and he gently relaxed them, allow his anger and tension to flow out in that one movement. Stepping back had not forced him down another step as he had figured it would but just further back on the one he still stood on and William was glad for that. He already had a height advantage, and he would hate to give him any more to work with.
William raised an eyebrow at Bill's tone. "Of course one can, but why would one such as yourself walk up the steps to an establishment" His voice lowered and his smirk grew. "that wants him in the gallows." He stated evenly his smirk never once leaving his face. At Bill's next comment, William resisted the urge to grin. "Then perhaps I should take a look to see if any of your other little friends are around, hmmm, they will tell me exactly what you are doing here." William said calmly playing on what they both knew. All the thieves in the city knew that the only way to escape the gallows was to get William on their side and William had help many a man escape, he had earned a good reputation among the upper, middle and lower classes, and Bill would be wise not to get on the wrong side of him.
But he had too much respect for Bill to turn him in or not defend him, though Bill himself didn't know that. He looked down at the dog and raised an eyebrow back up to Bill. "A loyal animal, I hope you did not acquire this loyalty through unlawful means.... Though I do not think you would be cruel enough to do something like that to an innocent animal." Though William had to admit the dog looked like it could give as well as it got. It was a very fitting animal for someone such as him.
William chuckled. "I may be a 'beak' but how many times have I gotten you little friends heads out of the noose." He said calmly and then looked Bill straight in the eye. "I am not bothering the public, as the public love me." He stated calmly indicating to the lawyers around him. "But if I bother you please feel free to leave. I am not holding you back in anyway, but I think any man eager to run away from someone of my status will cause alot of questions in normal society." He stated evenly, that godforsaken smirk returning to his lips.
